Winter Workouts at Red Rocks
It’s easy to love living in Colorado when you can experience exquisite blue-sky days that promise to reach 50 degrees by noon. In February! And when you can make a relatively short drive to the iconic Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater, take in fabulous views, and enjoy a variety of recreational options, it just keeps getting better and better.
Red Rocks Park encompasses 868 acres of geological marvels. It’s over 6,400 feet above sea level, and is a transition zone between the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. The amphitheater is the only naturally-occurring, acoustically perfect amphitheater in the world. Incredibly, concerts began here as early as 1906 when people realized that the site offered acoustic perfection. The city of Denver eventually acquired this area, and constructed the amphitheater, which was completed in 1936. Of course, the park reminds many of us of the legendary concerts we were lucky enough to attend, but there are plenty of other reasons to visit.
A winter morning at Red Rocks offers a glimpse of Coloradoans doing what Coloradoans do…enjoying the outdoors with a variety of exercise routines. There were the usual walkers, joggers, and hikers, but people also found a multitude of creative ways to use the amphitheater as an outdoor gym, doing squats, jumps, push-ups, triceps dips, and yoga on the benches…some incredibly challenging physical routines that caused the rest of us to just stop and stare in amazement.
When you are looking for a way to vary your exercise routine, challenge yourself with some strenuous stair climbing, try a walking meditation, or to simply experience what rigorous exercise does to your ability to breathe at 6,400 feet, Red Rocks Park is a great place to go. Of course, its natural beauty doesn’t hurt either.
